Types of Cables

Cable is a medium for transferring data between network devices. Different types of cables exist that serve different purposes and the choice of a particular type of cable is dependent on factors such as the computer network topology, protocol and size.

A Twisted Pair Cable comprises eight wires wound together in pairs. The number of twists per inch determine the transmission rate, cost, and effectiveness in eliminating interferences from other electrical devices. Tighter twisting increases the transmission rate and cost per foot.

 This type of cable started as the Ethernet cabling standard with a speed of 10Mbps (aka Category 3 or Cat 3), followed by 100 Mbps (Cat5 or Cat 5e) and then 10 Gbps. There are two types of twisted pair cables, namely, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) and Shielded Twisted Pair (STP). Although UTP is more commonly used due to its lower cost, there are various categories with different quality ranging from telephone-grade wires (1 Mbps) to high speed cable of up to 10,000 Mbps (Cat 6).

An RJ-45 connector is the standard connector for UTP cabling. This plastic connector resembles a large telephone-style connector with a slot that allows only a one-way insertion. RJ is short for Registered Jack, which means this connector adopts a standard used by the telephone industry.

Compared to UTP, STP cables are less susceptible to radio and electrical frequency interference from sources such as fluorescent lights, and are able to extend the maximum distance of the cables. This stronger resistance to interferences stem from the fact that the wires are shielded with foil in one of three ways, i.e. shielded in pairs, shielded as a group, or shielded in pairs plus shielded as a group of wires (known as double shield twisted pair).

Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable, probably the most commonly known cable among laymen as it’s used to connect a computer to a peripheral device such as a keyboard, also uses twisted pair wiring.

Fiber optics cables are bendable although they are made of strands of glass and use pulses of light to transmit electrical signals. These cables are generally used for long distance or high traffic communication in a Wide Area Network (WAN).  The two main types of fiber optics cables are single-mode and multi-mode fibers. Single-mode fibers are more commonly used in long distance telecommunication networks due to its high bandwidth and low loss of signals. Multi-mode fibers, on the other hand, are more economical and therefore used mainly in local networks.

In the past, crossover cables were used to connect the same type of network devices, for example, two home network computers. These cables are identified by the colour-coded wires that appear at its end connector. In home networks today, many of them are replaced by routers with built-in crossover capability.

Patch cables are straight-through network cables for temporary use. Twisted pair, fiber optic and coaxial patch cables are available and are differentiated from other cables by their shorter length. Other types of network cables include serial & parallel cables used in the 80’s and 90’s, and coaxial cables. Coaxial cables consist of a single copper conductor, a braided metal shield that blocks interferences, and a plastic layer that provides insulation. This type of cable provides high resistance to signal interferences and support greater cable lengths than twisted pair. They are however, more difficult to install as they do not bend easily.


Despite the prevalence of wireless technologies today, cables are still essential components in connecting a computer network and provide greater security than wireless network devices which are vulnerable to eves-dropping.

How to Clear Nasal Congestions

Similar to our heart beat, breathing is an unconscious reflex controlled by our nervous system. When we are well, inhaling and exhaling air is usually effortless. It’s not until we catch a cold or flu that we start to experience mild to moderate breathing difficulties caused by the so-called “stuffy nose”, also known as “nasal congestion” in medical terms, a condition when the tissue and blood vessels lining the nasal passage become inflamed or swollen.

There are many causes of nasal congestion. Besides the common cold or flu, other factors include allergens such as pollen and mold, or airborne irritants such as dust and smoke. While it is important to seek immediate medical attention for serious breathing problems caused by conditions such as asthma or severe allergic reactions, minor breathing difficulties caused by cold or flu can be treated with simple home remedies. It is advisable, however, to see the doctor if the nasal congestion is not alleviated in one week.

Nasal wash is a method of flushing out mucus, germs or allergens in the nasal passage using saltwater. Simply dissolve half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm distilled water, and then use a tool such as a small bulb syringe or neti pot to transfer the saltwater into your nose.  After drawing the solution into the bulb, place the tip of the syringe in one nostril, squeeze the bulb gently so that the water flows into the nostril, through the sinuses and out of the other nostril. Blow all the water out of your nostril gently, and then repeat the procedure for the other nostril. When using the neti pot, tip your head forward and slightly to the side, then pour the solution into the nostril on the upper side. Blow out the water and repeat for the other nostril.

Another way of clearing stuffy nose is to use a warm and cold application alternately. First, place a warm and wet towel over your nose and press it against your face. After one minute, replace with a cold, wet towel. Repeat a few times.

A steamy cup of herbal tea such as peppermint or ginger tea is also effective for clearing nasal congestion. Simply infuse one teaspoon of dried peppermint or freshly grated ginger root into a cup of hot water for ten minutes. Strain the ingredients and add natural sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup if desired.

Putting ESD Control Measures in Place

Have you ever touched someone or something and felt the sudden jolt of a mild electric current? This is a simple example of the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) that is generated from the human bodies. Albeit in low voltages that are invisible and inaudible, these discharges are high enough to damage static sensitive electronic devices such as integrated circuits, or cause some form of degradation in the performance of these devices over time.

Wikipedia defines ESD as “the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown”. Because ESD events can be easily triggered by simple acts such as walking, or transporting products from one location to another, many electronic manufacturing plants have established static control measures to limit personnel generated ESD and also set up electrostatic protective areas that are static-free to minimize the possible damage caused by the discharges. These control measures include the use of various ESD items such as wrist straps, cleanroom smocks, and ESD packaging bags.

When properly worn, wrist straps control static discharge by preventing the accumulation of charges on the person and dissipating the charges from the wearer to the ground. By keeping the wearer near ground potential so as to achieve the same potential with other grounded objects, a wrist strap can thus prevent any hazardous discharge.

Clothing also generates electrostatic charges when coming into contact and separating from other objects. To prevent clothing from inducing charges on the human body, static control apparels such as the clean room smocks are thus useful for reducing the negative effects of these charges.
